SeriesGuide 1.3 aka “Art Attack”

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

tl;dr: SeriesGuide 1.3 released with show art, episode images and many improvements.

The new version of SeriesGuide 1.3 is getting released today with a ton of new features. But the most notable thing you will notice when opening SeriesGuide after the update is the richer show list and overall some design improvements.

showlist

That’s right, finally some nice pictures! However after an update you will likely just see some generic icons. Do an ‘Update All’ to resolve that. Sadly it might happen that not all images get downloaded from theTVDB.com. To counter that, there is a new ‘Fetch Missing Art’ button in the menu which allows you to download just missing art at a later time. After trying, it will tell you if images are still missing, because it is possible that some shows just don’t have art.

Regarding updating: updating a show, updating all shows and fetching art will now happen in the background. You will be able to continue using SeriesGuide during background operation, though you will not be able to check/uncheck episodes. Obviously you can’t do multiple background operations at once, you will have to wait for one to finish. E.g. if you update a single show you will have to wait for it to complete before updating another.

To justify this posts title the show poster will also be shown in ‘Show Info’. And if you did an ‘Update All’ after updating SeriesGuide as I said, in the episode descriptions an episode image will be downloaded. All these images get cached in memory and on your SD card, so they only have to download once. You can clear these caches in Settings if you need to. Uninstalling SeriesGuide will do so, too.

More Sorting

Besides the ‘art attack’ there are some further improvements. You can now change the sorting of seasons and episodes directly through the menu. Episodes are additionally sortable by alphabet.

To clean up the menu on the mainscreen, the Backup/Restore function has been moved into settings and is now called ‘Backup/Delete’.

New Database Version

To support the new image capabilities the database version has changed to 8. This means you will not be able to import database backups from SeriesGuide 1.3 and upwards into older releases (1.2.7 and below).

As usual it is still possible to import older database versions (down to version 4).

Awesomeness at TheTVDB.com

To conclude I want to point you to the service which makes this whole app even possible. The people over at TheTVDB.com do a tremendous job maintaining and expanding such a huge, freely accessible database of TV shows. If you like this app check out their web service and consider helping and/or donating.

That’s it! SeriesGuide 1.3 should appear in Android Market very soon. But nevertheless you can download the latest version here:

You! Must… Watch. See and… Listen. Listen Again.

Hell, I totally forgot about Avatar…

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

So here it comes: YOU HAVE TO SEE AVATAR (in frakking 3D)!?!!

I was clicking through my pages to look for some possibility to update content as I had to come off my learning trip… And what do I see: TV/movies misses one of the greatest cinematic experiences I recently had (around christmas). I’m a little late with this (Avatar rose beyond Titanic concerning gross the last days) but for whomever’s sake, here are some lines about it.

The opening scene with the cryo pads is AMAZING 3D, it’s the first time in the movie I realised this is actual 3 dimensional cinema (OK, besides I wore 3D glasses). Later on it felt sometimes too obvious a scene was shot for the pure intention of using 3D capabilities (lots of people standing behind glass-windowed doors). Besides the mentioned cryo scene there was only one, maybe two where I do remember I really felt like I’m there: the 3D displays in the (kinda) CIC and the inner view of a cockpit of an aircraft. These were “Why can’t I touch these, they are right in front of me”-moments. I want more of this! But obviously you’re most of the time observing and can not play in this story yourself… maybe the characters could integrate me, well, just an (hard to ever realise) idea :D

To sum up the CG-content: it was awesome, one of the best and realistic (read jungle, plants and animals gfx here) I have seen. It kind of continues what started with Star Trek XI, it integrates well and enhances the story (you feel the fear of this big tree going down, shot by these huge vehicles in the sky) and isn’t purely for showing off. And…

…that’s it. I gotta make something to eat right now, I’m staaarving.

Update: See ‘Avatar,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘District 9′ get visual-effects Oscar nods, but District 9, well, it was a little strange and confrontating (against us as a human race).

Has anyone seen my new watch?

So to follow up one of my older posts (which are very rare, I know), here is the new one (the old did not show up in time). It feels like high-end with it’s solar-powered battery and auto-illumination. But wait for it: it has a power saving mode which turns it off at nights if it’s dark enough, not kidding…

OMFG! New Wi-Fi Direct to Connect Gadgets Without Routers

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Seen this on a Gizmodo post. This is so OMFG! If this will really work as advertised, this will change everything… Well, at least sharing files between my devices and between friends. Bye, bye bluetooth and USB drive, hello direct 811.02 n!

“Wi-Fi devices will soon be able to connect in a new way that makes it more simple and convenient than ever to do things like print, share and display. The Wi-Fi Alliance is nearing completion of a new specification to enable Wi-Fi devices to connect to one another without joining a traditional home, office, or hotspot network. The Wi-Fi Alliance expects to begin certification for this new specification in mid-2010, and products which achieve the certification will be designated Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct.”

Wi-Fi Alliance Press Release

I should mention, this feature can be enabled via a software-only update. So all your legacy hardware will work with this spec if there is new software for it available.
